Duties
The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Sultan Qaboos University, Sultanate of Oman, is pleased to invite applications for a full-time faculty position in Mechanical Engineering at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor beginning in January 2023.
The candidate must have a background in dynamics and control systems with a demonstrated track record in research and a strong commitment to teaching. Applications are invited in all areas of dynamics and controls, particularly those that complement current research activities in vibration control, smart materials and structures, robotics, automation, and instrumentations. Candidates with further knowledge and proven experience in the areas of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning (ML) will be considered over other candidates. The successful candidate is expected to be able to attract funding for research, and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in control systems, dynamics, and related areas.
Assignment: The prospective faculty member will be assigned to teaching undergraduate and graduate students, supervening final year projects, providing academic advising to students, initiating and cooperating in research in the field of expertise and participating actively in the different committees in the Department.
The Department: The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering has about 500 students in three programs: Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Mechatronics. It has about 30 faculty members from 12 different countries working cooperatively in a very friendly environment. The Department also has well-established and maintained laboratories and computing facilities.
The University: Sultan Qaboos University is the main and most renowned institution in the country and one of the well-recognized in the region. It is located in the capital Muscat and within close reach to the main shopping mall, airport and main public points of interest. It has nine colleges in humanities and natural sciences. The reserved campus area is about 8 km2, of which about 2.8 million square meters (700 acres) is occupied by a beautiful campus that includes a recreation center, four-story library building, a post office, a bank, a number of shopping and service stores, a well-equipped hospital which receives the most critical cases in the country and a clinic dedicated to providing medical care to the university employees and their families.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
All candidates must have an earned Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree by the date of appointment in Mechanical Engineering or related field from an accredited university. The candidate must have excellent academic credentials in his field with a good research and publication record.
Targeted Candidates should at least satisfy the followings:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Record of or potential for strong scholarly achievements in the relevant field.
- A commitment to teaching excellence and an ongoing, externally funded research program.
- Willingness to teach core undergraduate and graduate courses and offer electives in the area of specialty.
- Active in research in the area of specialty and the ability to attract funds and work in collaborative research teams.
- Willingness and preferably experience in participating in administrative academic duties.
- Preferably, having experience with accreditation tasks and particularly ABET accreditation.
