Duties

General Duties:

1) Keeping abreast of recent developments in the academic field to enhance teaching and research activities within the department.

2) Implementing the security and safety requirements established by the university to provide a suitable working environment within the department.
3) Teaching in the field of specialization.
4) Providing academic guidance to students and providing them with information related to the specialization.
5) Participating in department and college council meetings and engaging in the activities of internal and external committees as requested.
6) Contributing to scientific research, providing scientific consultations, and attending conferences and scientific seminars in the field of specialization following the established rules.
7) Contributing to quality assurance activities in academic aspects in accordance with assigned tasks.
8) Contributing to community service by participating in seminars and workshops and preparing studies and research related to community issues.
9) Any other tasks assigned in the field of work.
 

The Farm Manager is expected to:

  1. Promote research excellence and leadership to enhance the CAMS and SQU missions and vision 2040.
  2. Initiate, coordinate, participate, and develop research programs in collaboration with the Office of the Assistant Dean for Research and Postgraduate Studies at CAMS, with relevance to the challenges facing the agricultural community.
  3. Effectively communicate and oversee compliance with university academic policies and policies related to the conduct of teaching, research, and community services, in terms of finances, administration, human resources, and intellectual property.
  4. Participate in the staff routine evaluation process and conduct administrators’ annual evaluations and reviews, as per SQU requirements.
  5. Serve when required in college committees including the College Board, Executive Committee, Appointment and Promotion Committees.
  6. Function effectively as a member of the administrative team of the College of Agricultural and Marine Sciences.
  7. Foster collaborations and participate in activities and on research teams that support the work of CAMS, its other facilities, relevant SQU Research Centers, and other units inside and outside SQU.
  8. Align the development and training of staff with the operational goals of the AES
  9. Develop strategies to increase, maintain, and monitor the quality and safety of agricultural produce at the AES

Position-Specific Duties:

  • Run the day-to-day administrative and financial operations of AES
  • Oversee the three sections of AES ensuring efficient distribution of finances and human resources and smooth running of existing and future facilities, including horse stable, greenhouses, machinery, and the general store.
  • Report to the Dean of the College of Agricultural and Marine Sciences and the College Board on all matters related to AES operation.
  • Plan the finances, production, and development to maintain the AES progress against AES and SQU-wide objectives and financial parameters.
  • Provide material and labor support to teaching and research activities at the College of Agricultural and Marine Sciences and SQU.
  • Develop hands-on skills and training courses for the SQU community
  • Market AES agricultural products effectively
  • Apply health and safety standards and protocols across the AES.
  • Get involved in teaching as required and offer elective courses in the fields of agriculture, animal, veterinary, or economics, depending on the qualification.

    1. The applicant must be of good conduct and behavior.
    2. To have the following qualifications for appointment:
    - It must be issued on a regular basis, and not be in the system of affiliation, distance education, or blended education.
    - It must be equivalent by the competent authority in the Sultanate if it is issued by a non-Omani higher education institution (Only for Omani).
    3. Proficiency in using information technology effectively.
    4. Priority is given to those who have experience in university teaching and scientific research.

    Specific requirements: 

    Major responsibilities include the planning, coordination, budgeting, and monitoring of AES administrative, financial, facility management,  teaching, research, and human resources. The successful candidate will provide vision, energy, enthusiasm, and innovative dynamic leadership to the Agricultural Experiment Station with oversight of its three sections: plant, animal, and services. The farm Manager is administratively responsible to the Dean of CAMS and the College Board, works closely with the Academic Departments of the college, and communicates and coordinates with other colleges and units at SQU, and other committees as necessary.

    Provide primary leadership and administrative oversight for the AES, including but not limited to strategic planning, research program planning, and direction, fiscal and personnel management, allocation of resources, regulatory compliance, oversight of the AES sections and units, support of faculty, students, and postgraduates research development, and pursuit of extramural funding and projects, maintain accountability with stakeholders, meet all CAMS and SQU reporting and compliance requirements, establish relations with the public and private sectors for the benefit of AES, CAMS and SQU in the areas of agriculture, food and natural resources

    Selection Criteria:

    • Holds a PhD degree related to Agricultural Sciences and/or Business Administration in the Agro-Food sector.
    • Has a minimum of five years of experience as a farm manager (agricultural research station operational experience, practical farming experience, and farm or similar facility management experience)
    • Has qualifications and training in supervisory and managerial roles.
    • Self-motivation and drive, with a proven ability to motivate others.
    • A good understanding of modern farming methods and technology and potential applications of future technologies in agriculture.
    • Track record of research project management and publications.
    • Fluent in English speaking and writing (Arabic language skills are desirable).
    • Teaching experience will be an advantage.
    • Experience as an academic department head or equivalent university or academic administrative experience is preferable.
